Bariatric Surgery Complications in Turkey

Bariatric surgery, including gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and gastric banding, is commonly performed to support weight loss in patients struggling with obesity. While many patients experience successful outcomes, bariatric procedures carry significant risks — especially when performed negligently or without adequate aftercare.

Common complications include:

  • Infection: Post-surgical infections at the incision site or internally can lead to serious health issues and require further treatment.

  • Leaks from Staple Lines: Poor surgical technique can result in gastrointestinal leaks, causing severe pain, infection, and in some cases, sepsis.

  • Blood Clots (DVT/PE): Improper post-op care can increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, both potentially life-threatening.

  • Internal Bleeding: Uncontrolled bleeding may occur during or after surgery if not properly managed.

  • Nutritional Deficiencies: Inadequate guidance post-surgery can lead to long-term vitamin and mineral deficiencies, especially after gastric bypass.

  • Bowel Obstruction: Scarring or narrowing of the intestines can block food passage, requiring corrective surgery.

  • Dumping Syndrome: Rapid gastric emptying can cause nausea, weakness, and diarrhoea, especially if patients aren’t properly informed about dietary changes.

  • Device Malfunction or Slippage: In gastric band procedures, the band can slip or erode into the stomach wall, often due to improper placement.

In many cases, these complications may be the result of surgical negligence, lack of informed consent, inadequate aftercare, or treatment by unlicensed practitioners. If you’ve experienced complications following bariatric surgery in Turkey, you may be entitled to legal compensation.
